GPD Win 2 Handheld Launches April 2018, Runs GTA V

GPD Win 2 Playing GTA V

Most of the devices we carry around in a pocket today run either Android or iOS. Windows on smartphones is no longer an option, but full-fat Windows on a pocket-friendly device is still possible thanks to the GPD Win. This handheld gaming console/ultra-portable PC launched back in October 2016, but next year it is set to be replaced by the GPD Win 2.

The GPD Win is quite a versatile device, running Windows 10 Home on a 5.5-inch 720p display in a clamshell case measuring just 155-by-97mm. Inside, you'll find an Intel Atom Z8700 running at 1.6GHz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and Intel HD 405 Graphics. Storage comes in the form of 64GB of flash memory and a microSD card slot. The GPD Win costs around $400 and somehow manages to squeeze in a full QWERTY keyboard, D-Pad, two joysticks, and ABXY buttons.

As Liliputing reports, the handheld is set to be replaced early next year with an updated version carrying the name GPD Win 2. Full details are not known yet, but the spec certainly looks better. The display is still 720p, but increases in size to 6-inches. The Atom chip is replaced by an Intel Core M3-7Y30 Kaby Lake with Intel 615 Graphics, and the RAM increases to 8GB of DDR3. Storage is much improved too, thanks to the use of a 128GB M.2 SSD. Although not stated, it seems likely the operating system will be Windows 10 Home once again.

The one big negative we know of so far is the price. Where as the original cost $400, the GPD Win 2 is expected to be $699. However, an Indiegogo campaign planned for Jan. 15 will offer it for $599 with the launch happening at some point in April.

As you can see from the videos above, the GPD Win 2 is capable of running GTA V, with videos also being posted of the handheld running Bayonetta, Need for Speed: Rivals, and Breath of the Wild through a Wii U emulator. So it's certainly no slouch in the performance department and should make an excellent gaming handheld if you can stomach the price.
